Part of the reason I am doing theoretical physics right now is to not associate with anyone who genuinely think “Mathematics >>> Physics”. In person, I've never encountered this type of people, but the prevalence of this sentiment (unironically) makes me feel the pure math community is toxic.
I also used to be what you call a "pure math" person - my favourite course in my first year is group theory; second year, differential geometry. But this kind of "I'm better than you" attitude accelerates my "transition" to theoretical physics.
This is also the main reason why I am always stressed whenever I put out a new video, because I created, in my own head, a lot of potential comments suggesting "this is not difficult enough", or "why are you not rigorous". These suck the fun out of sharing my passion in math.
These comments in my head did, almost always, turn out to not just be in my head. This just adds to the stress. Currently I just go with whatever I find interesting, and talk what I want to talk about without caring about them.
What I wanted to say is that there is at least a non-insignificant number of people in the "pure math" community pushing this kind of meme and that actively drives people (at least, me) away. Maybe that's what some of you want. Who knows?
